Recently released in cinemas, Atunwa is a unique Nollywood film that we were fortunate enough to watch as one of the first sets of movie lovers.
Starring renowned actors such as Tina Mba, Jide Kosoko, Okey Uzoeshi, Yomi Fash, Kehinde Bankole, and others, the film explores the strange happenings in our society from a traditional African/Yoruba perspective.
The story revolves around Kemi Oye (portrayed by Tina MBA) and her past life, which is haunting her entire family. Missing the first 10 minutes of the film will leave you lost throughout the rest of the movie.
The writers of Atunwa are to be commended for bringing a fresh perspective to the appraisal of events that are often treated with levity, such as the belief in reincarnation. The movie’s portrayal of our African roots and the consultation of an Ifa Priest and divinations is reminiscent of the glorious ages of African civilization.
While there were some unnecessarily prolonged scenes, the film kept us engrossed with mixed feelings of suspense and anger due to the many unanswered “whys”. In addition to its unique storyline, Atunwa teaches the importance of contentment and the need for peaceful family relationships.
Unfortunately, the ending and some of the over-prolonged, unnecessary scenes detracted from the film’s overall impact. Despite our desire to see the conclusion of Kehinde Bankole and Yomi Fash’s characters, the writers rushed the ending, leaving viewers unsatisfied and hungry for more.
In conclusion, Atunwa is a film with great potential but falls short due to its rushed ending and unnecessary scenes.
For Atunwa it’s 5.5/10.
