Bassey shines as Ajax secures victory over NEC Nijmegen, reveals favourite position

Calvin Bassey, the Super Eagles star who plays for Ajax, has revealed his preference for playing as a centre-back instead of a left-back. Bassey, who joined Ajax from Rangers last summer for €23.00m, had a rocky start to his career in the Dutch Eredivisie, drawing criticism from some past Dutch internationals who questioned the transfer fee paid for him.

After some inconsistent performances, Bassey was dropped from the starting lineup for a few games but has since regained his place and shown a new level of confidence. He recently earned the man-of-the-match award for his exceptional display in Ajax’s 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen on Sunday.

Following the match, Bassey indicated that his impressive performance could be attributed to his role as a centre-back, a position he enjoys playing, even though he started his career as a left-back. While Bassey can play in both positions, it seems that he feels more comfortable in the centre-back role.

“I can play in both positions. Maybe I prefer the centre, but I just want to play. Where I stand is the last thing on my mind. I just want to be on the field and give 110 per cent,” Bassey told Soccernews.

Bassey added that he still has a lot to offer to the team, but there are also many things he can learn at Ajax.

“I bring power to the team and speed at the back. Ajax can also give me a lot in better understanding the spaces and the game. I came here to grow and because it is one of the best places for young players to develop,” he added.

Bassey has made 33 appearances in all competitions for Ajax this season, scoring one goal and recording five assists.
