Man sets wife ablaze for refusing to cook for him

Azeez Hassan, a 46-year-old man, has allegedly burned his wife, Olayinka Hassan, due to her not cooking for him.

The husband was apprehended by police in Ogun State after a report was filed at the Ibogun divisional police headquarters by Olayinka’s father.

The victim’s father informed the police that on October 22, 2022, Azeez set his wife on fire due to a minor disagreement. Olayinka, who is the mother of one, was taken to a hospital in Ibadan for treatment.

According to a statement from the Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the DPO of the Ibogun division, CSP Samuel Oladele, responded to the report but the suspect had fled the scene.

However, Azeez was eventually caught on January 22, 2023.

During questioning, the suspect confessed to committing the crime and stated that the devil was to blame. He also revealed that the disagreement arose because he asked Olayinka to cook for him, but instead she washed clothes.

Azeez, according to the police spokesman, said he became hangry “and the annoyance made him to pour petrol on her and set her on fire.”

“When asked whose clothes the woman was washing, he confessed that it was his clothes.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has transferred the case to the Homicide Section of the state CIID for further investigation and possible prosecution.
