Oluwapelumi Joseph Olona, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State, Nigeria, took his own life.
PostNGR gathered that the student, who was studying Industrial Design, was found hanged in his off-campus lodge room in the Aule area of Akure on Saturday, January 21, 2023.
According to sources, Olona’s close friends became worried when he didn’t answer his phone and wouldn’t open his door to them.
They eventually forced their way into his room, where they discovered his body hanging with the aid of buckets.
The cause of his suicide is yet to be determined, but students in the area where he lived speculate that he may have been struggling with depression and financial issues.
Olona, who was affectionately known as “Black” among his peers, was reportedly a well-liked student who didn’t have any known conflicts or issues with others.
The President of the FUTA Students’ Union, Jesunifemi Asoore, has confirmed the incident in a statement.
“I know we are all saddened by his death, and we’re sending our condolences to his family and friends. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness and confusion. We want to assure you that we, the Students Union Government, care about you and the feelings that you may be experiencing.” he said.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Funmi Odunlami, also confirmed the death in a statement on Saturday, January 21.
“His body had been taken to the morgue, and investigation has started to unravel the reasons behind his action, but it was a case of suicide.” the PPRO said.
