Tomoaki Hamatsu, also known as Nasubi (“Eggplant”), is a Japanese comedian affiliated with Office K. He gained widespread recognition for his participation in the controversial reality TV show called Susunu! Denpa Shōnen.
In the show, Hamatsu was challenged to enter sweepstakes in order to win various prizes. Despite being given the option to opt-out, he willingly agreed to participate. His initial objective was to accumulate enough money to afford a flight back home to Japan, preferably with Japan Airlines.
However, he quickly achieved this target after a few weeks of entering competitions. The goals were then revised multiple times, first aiming for a ticket in business class and then in first class. Surprisingly, Hamatsu managed to meet these revised goals within a matter of weeks as well.
Upon winning enough to return to Japan, Hamatsu was blindfolded and transported to another apartment within the country. When the blindfold was removed, he found himself in a TV studio with a large live audience, instead of the expected continuation of the challenge. This revelation was confusing to him, as he believed the show had not yet been broadcast.
This entire ordeal lasted approximately 15 months, during which Hamatsu documented his experience of being confined from the outside world in his diaries. These diaries became a bestseller in Japan, and the TV show garnered record-breaking viewership with 17 million viewers tuning in every Sunday night.
Hamatsu faced challenges after his release. He mentioned feeling hot and sweaty wearing clothes for the first six months following his ordeal, and he also experienced difficulties engaging in conversations for an extended period of time.
In April 2020, Hamatsu utilized his personal experience of self-isolation to encourage people to comply with stay-at-home orders during the initial outbreaks of the COVID-19 pandemic.
